Evaline Cowl

 

Use the natural tendencies of Tunisian crochet to slant toward the beginning edge of each row to create this stylish cowl in an afternoon.

Materials

Lion Brand Mandala - 150 g/5.3 oz - 590 yards/539 meters ~ Appx 50g to complete 1 scarf
Pictured sample was made with Lion Brand Mandala Sparkle

Gauge: 15sts x 10r = 4”/10cm in pattern.

Supplies

·J/10 – 6 mm hook w/ 8” cable & stopper           
·Scissors
·Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations 

·ch – chain
·es – edge stitch (1st loop on the hook at the beginning of the FwdP & the last stitch created by inserting the hook under the “v” loops of the last stitch of the row below)
·FwdP – Forward Pass
·rep – Repeat
·RetP – Return Pass
·sk – skip
·slst – Slip Stitch
·st(s) – Stitch / Stitches
yo – yarn over

Special Stitches

etss2tog – Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 together.
Insert hook under the vertical bar of the next 2 tss, yo, pull up a loop, ch1.
tds – Tunisian Double Simple (use as edge stitch in this pattern)
yo, insert the hook under both vertical bars of the last stitch, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops
tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch
tsstl – Tunisian Simple Stitch in the top loop.
Insert hook through the top loop of the closing chain between the etss2tog and the next etss2tog, yo, pull up a loop.

Pattern Notes

This stitch pattern worked alone would create a length of fabric slanting toward the beginning side of the forward pass. To create the square end of the scarf, short rows are worked over the 1st 8 rows of the scarf with the foundation row as the base.  

Foundation Row:  ch 34.  
Working into the back bump of each ch st,  yarn over and pull a loop through leaving the loop on your hook. 34 loops on the hook.
RetP – ch1, (yo, pull thru 2 loops) rep (-) to end.

2. es, (tsstl, tss) x2, tss in foundation row x 4. Note: insert hook under both the left leg of the yo & the vertical bar of the etss2tog to create the tss in this row. Use this method throughout.
9 loops on the hook.

4. es, (tsstl, tss) x6, tss in foundation row x4. 17 loops on the hook.

Rep rows 9 & 10 until the piece measures 30” (76 cm) from the beginning corner to the 1st st of the last row completed.

Bind off in tss. Do not cut yarn.

Fold the scarf to bring the last stitch of the bind off edge will meet the first stitch of the cast on edge. See photo 1.

 ZigZag join the slanted ending edge to the side of the fabric as shown in Photo 1.

Finish off and weave in ends.
