Intro
This cute little hat is my first knit design. I saw this stitch on a baby cardigan pattern and thought it would make a cute hat.
It’s great for using small amounts of contrasting yarn when making baby hats for charity. Knitted slip stitches create this nice surface stitch pattern.

Materials
Designed for most worsted weight yarn. 160 yards (80 MC/80CC)US 6 Circular or DPN
US 7 Circular or DPN
Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 18 sts X 28 rows = 4” in pattern.
Sized for premie to adult.

Patterns Notes
- Pattern is worked in the round, bottom up.
- Number in parenthesis indicate stitch counts for additional pattern sizes; Premie (Toddler, Child, Adult-S, Adult-L)
Abbreviations
k – knit
k2tog – Insert the right needle from front to back (knitwise) into the next two stitches on the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle (as when knitting) and pull it through.
p – purl
pm - place marker
rep – repeat
rep – repeat
sl1p - slip next stitch purlwise with yarn in back
ssk - slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 purlwise, insert left needle into front of both stitches & knit
st(s) - stitch; stiches
Cast on with smaller needles - 60, (72, 84, 96, 108) stitches with MC, join to knit in the round. PM at beginning of round.
Work 1x1 rib. (p1, Ktbl1 to marker) x4, (6, 8, 10, 12),
Change to larger needles & begin Slip stitch pattern
Slip stitch pattern:
Row 1 – With MC, knit.
Row 2 – With CC *k1, sl1p*, repeat to marker
Row 3 – As row 2
Row 4 – As row 1
Repeat rows 1-4 of slip stitch pattern to 3”, (4½”, 6”, 6¾”, 7½”) from the bottom of rib edge. Ending with row 4.
Crown
1st Decrease:
(MC) *k4, k2tog, ssk, k4* to end. – 50 (60, 70, 80, 90) sts
Work row 2-4 of pattern
2nd Decrease:
(MC) k2, k2tog, ssk, k3, *k3, k2tog, ssk, k3* to last stitch before marker, k1 – 40 (48, 56, 64, 72) sts
Work row 2-4 of pattern
3rd Decrease:
(MC) *k2, k2tog, ssk, k2* to end. – 30 (36, 42, 48, 54) sts
Work row 2-4 of pattern
4th Decrease:
(MC) k2tog, ssk, k1, *k1, k2tog, ssk, k1* to last stitch before marker, k1 – 20 (24, 28, 32, 36) sts
Work row 2-4 of pattern
5th Decrease:
(MC) *k2tog, ssk* to end. – 10 (12, 14, 16, 18) sts
Cut the yarn leaving an 8" tail.
Use a tapestry needle to pull tail through remaining loops and secure. Weave in the ends.
